How do I Pay my Medical Bills After an Accident?
Following an accident, many people are concerned with how to pay their medical bills. Because Florida is a no-fault state, it is the responsibility of your personal injury protection (PIP) carrier, the company insuring your motor vehicle, to pay for your medical coverage, up to your policy limit. You will be responsible for paying the amount of your deductible before your coverage kicks in. In addition to your personal injury protection, you may have also contracted with your automobile insurance carrier for additional medical coverage known as med pay. This will pay for things that your personal injury protection will not pay for. Med Pay will cover you until all the monies are exhausted, which will then make your health insurance the primary insurance carrier. Your health insurance will then cover whatever medical expenses you incur after the PIP and the med pay have been exhausted. If you do bring suit for your personal injuries, which must have resulted in death or permanent injury, your health insurance will have a lien against any recovery you make in your personal injury action against the at-fault driver.
